MRN and the Export Accompanying Document
The MRN uniquely identifies a customs movement, while the export accompanying information makes that reference usable in the exit process.
Definition
MRN means Master Reference Number and identifies a customs movement in electronic systems. For exports, the reference appears on the Export Accompanying Document or corresponding data records. Registration, release, presentation at exit and closure are separate statuses.
Why does it matter?
The forwarder, customs office of exit and exporter must refer to the same procedure. The existence of an MRN alone does not prove that the goods have left or that customs has confirmed exit.
Key points
- Transmit the complete MRN without transcription errors.
- Check the procedure status, not merely the existence of the number.
- Archive the exit confirmation as separate evidence.
Practical example
After the electronic export declaration is accepted, the shipment receives an MRN. It is presented at exit and the procedure is later closed with exit confirmation.
Common mistakes
- Confusing the MRN with an AWB or forwarder reference
- Treating acceptance of the declaration as proof of exit
- Assigning an export document to the wrong package or goods configuration
