Air freight surcharges: FSC, SSC and other fees

Definition

Surcharges are added to the basic air freight rate. Common descriptions include Fuel Surcharge and Security Surcharge, but abbreviations and calculation bases are not globally uniform. Charges may apply per chargeable kilogram, AWB, package or as a fixed amount.

Why does it matter?

A low base rate cannot be compared with an all-in quotation unless surcharges are included. Variable amounts may also change between quotation, booking and departure unless price validity is agreed.
